Can Perdiems be Canceled?

Dear Concerned Perdiem,

No, your manager can NOT automatically cancel you for a shift. Canceling perdiems is a thing of the past!

According to our contract, "having too much staff" translates into a high staff or "Low Census" situation. Your manager should consider this surplus of staff as a chance to allow nurses to do their committee work, mandatories, educational opportunties, etc. Then, the process would be to follow the steps in Article 20A "Staffing Adjustments" (page 37 of your red contract book).

1. Premium pay shift nurses would be canceled.
2.Overtime shifts canceled.
3.Vounteers may float to another unit.
4. Travelers will be floated.
5.Bargaining unit members may volunteer to take time off- using their preference of CTO or VA.
6. Travelers will be mandated time off. 7.Extra shifts above committed hours will be canceled.
*8.Perdiems will be canceled.

I don`t know about your unit, but I know we never get past #5. There are always plenty of nurses who volunteer to take the day off!

Thank you for your question. Come back again!
